Neuroscience for Drummers featuring Fred Armisen & Dr. David Eagleman
Are drummers’ brains actually wired differently? Join Sing for Science for an extraordinary evening of comedy, music, and brain science featuring legendary comedian/musician Fred Armisen and renowned Stanford neuroscientist Dr. David Eagleman. Inspired by a real-world experiment that began when Brian Eno asked Dr. Eagleman to test the brain activity of U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr., this live event explores the deep connections between rhythm, perception, motor coordination, and creativity.
Sing for Science joins Fred and Dr. Eagleman for a dynamic conversation centered around unpacking exactly what happens inside the mind of a musician. To close the show, we’ll recreate Dr. Eagleman’s original experiment live on stage: Fred will play the drums while wearing EEG equipment, giving the audience a real-time, visual look into his brain activity as he plays. Fred Armisen is a comedian, writer, producer, and musician. He is the co-creator, co-writer and co-star of IFC’s Emmy-nominated series Portlandia. He is currently in the hit Netflix series Wednesday as Uncle Fester. He stars in HBO’s Los Espookys, which he co-wrote and executive produced. He can also be heard in the hit animated Super Mario Bros movie. Armisen stars in, writes, and produces IFC’s hit show Documentary Now. He has also appeared in HBO’s Our Flag Means Death, Judd Apatow’s The Bubble, and Amazon’s series Forever. He voices characters in Big Mouth and The Mitchells vs. The Machines. Armisen is an 11-season veteran of Saturday Night Live. From 2014-2024, Armisen was band leader of the 8G Band on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
Dr. David Eagleman is a neuroscientist at Stanford University, a New York Times bestselling author, and a prominent science communicator. He is the writer and host of the Emmy-nominated PBS series The Brain with David Eagleman and the author of numerous acclaimed books on brain plasticity, time perception, and synesthesia, including Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain and Livewired. Beyond his research and teaching, Dr. Eagleman serves as the CEO of Neosensory, a company developing sensory substitution technology, and works extensively to translate complex neuroscience for the general public.
